Please take a look at the Preston Guild 2012 website and share your thoughts on the forthcoming plans for this year's celebrations. Will you be taking part? What are you looking forward to? Have your parents or grandparents shared their memories of previous guilds?

I had just left school in 1972 so didn't get to take part in the school pageant. I remember, though, that two of my younger sisters participated in the Pageant in the Park (Avenham) as rainbows, if I recall correctly. I did participate in the torchlight procession walking alongside a float advertising the North Lancashire Centre of the Caravan Club. For most of the previous day I had helped make hundreds of green, yellow and red flowers out of crepe paper to decorate the float!! However, it was all so long ago it's a bit of a blur.
Ms Cox.
the guild is a celebration leading back to the cold dark period of medieval preston, britain. sadly im not getting envolved with the years amazing celebration but i have read the website and it does look good but i also think the scrolls is a bit odd to have in a festival of an important lanchsire city, preston. i have seen the scrolls case and found out that it is a replica of the old clock tower and has the link to ex prestonians that emagrated to other countries which is cool.altogether i think that it maybe a good idea to check for things i could do.
ReplyDeleteI am really looking forward to Preston Guild this year as I think it'll be a great event to participate/watch!! Im not taking part but I am part of the Churches Altar servers Guild which took place earlier on this year and was great fun!
ReplyDeleteMegan Whitlock 7S
I am taking part in the guild this year. Because i take part in church i automaticly have to take part and walk with church. I am looking forward to it because some of us get to go on the float and ride round which will be funny as.
ReplyDeleteLauren Martin 8H
I am really looking forward to Preston Guild this year as I am taking part in it with my Granddad. I am also quite scared because its my first time but my grandparents say "there's nothing to be scared about, have fun" so I will. The Guild (as my granddad would say) has been going on since Medieval times. they also make a scroll every 100 years or so to make sure they have lists of everyone who is taking part, so I'm told.

DeleteI can’t wait for this year’s Guild. From what I have heard it is going to be fantastic. I am going to try to take part in some way and I will definitely be watching the processions. My Grandma has shared many of her memories from the previous Guilds with me and I can’t wait to experience one myself.
ReplyDeleteBen Martland 7S
I can't wait till the Preston Guild it will be great. I am not taking part but one of my friends is in the Churches Altar Servers Guild, which took place earlier this year. From what I have heard it is going to be fantastic!! My mum has told me that streets have 'street parties' and that something takes place in town.
ReplyDeleteKatie Blair 7S
I'm actually really excited for the Preston Guild. Although i'm taking part i'm excited to hear about everyone who is to hear what they did. I don’t actually know what you do in this event so if someone could tell me exactly what you do in the Guild it would be very useful thanks.
ReplyDeleteAmy Whiteside 7R English Set 1
i am not taking part in the guild this year. some of the events look really fun such as the global rainbow thing. this in a once in a lifetime experience for people who havent taken part and i would like to take part in it.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading this post! Unfortunately I am not taking part in this event despite how fun it sounds! The floats look really vibrant and bold and it looks like everyone has a great time! Obviously none of us have experienced a Preston guild as they are only held once every twenty years. As it is the only guild that is still held in the UK it is very unique and is dated back from 1179!
ReplyDeleteMy familly have definatly participated in the previous Guild, as they dressed up as varied characters. Despite the fact my mum didn't dress up, she dressed her nephews up as clowns and helped out with the make up. Although none of us have never experienced a Preston Guild, as they are only held every 20 years, i would definatly give it a try and make the most of this unique event. I am most excited to be taking part in this years biggest event in Preston 2012. The floats that Ms Cox mentioned look really eyecatching and bold. I am shocked that the Guild dates back from 1179, as i have just researched it!
ReplyDeleteJessica Dahya (9E3)
Wow I didn't even know that much about the Preston Guild until now. I definitely like the look of the carnivals and the family activities. You will find me on the sidelines watching! I was also shocked at how long it had been going on for, since 1179!
ReplyDeleteEllie Lloyd 7s
I don't really know anything about the Preston Guild! Until I looked at the website, I haven't really talked about it with parents or family or anything. But it looks like a really fun family carnival. I cannot believe how long its been going on for. It's also been 20 years since the last one, so this will be the first Preston Guild I am to see. I cannot wait!
ReplyDeleteKelsey Raynor 7N 7K1
I am not going to take part in the preston guild hall but i will be watching the celebrations going on the tv at home. I dont think the guild will be just about celebrating but also remember the important people that made this city like it is now. I have seen the website as a important person will be coming, also lots of activities and charties will be held which is really fantastic as well. To me this guild will be the one i will remember as i have never heard of it before because of the excitement that no one put to it.
ReplyDeleteIbraheem Hussain 8S
Ibraheem , the idea is you watch the events live in your hometown! they won' be on the TV - except for local news highlights.
ReplyDeleteRick Patel 8s.
ReplyDeleteI think the Preston Guild website looks really interesting and i maybe having second thoughts of actually going.Me and my parent have never been to the Preston Guild Hall which i think it quite depressing since i have now read alot about it.I am probably looking forward to the street party because it looks exciting and has been a tradition part of the Guild.
I am really looking forward to the Preston Guild! I have looked at the website and it looks very interesting and amazing. Sadly I am not taking part this year but I hope I will do next time! The people who are taking part must be very lucky!
ReplyDeleteHana Masaarane 7R
I am very fond of the Preston Guild website I think all the things that are happening look really fun and interesting. Unfortunately, I am not taking part in the Preston guild but I am going to watch the activities going on. The website is appealing and flamboyant it makes you feel like you need to take part and everything and it looks rally fun. I have never been or seen a guild because it only happens every 20 years although I asked my parents and grandparents and they say `it is really fun and great because your community comes together! `. The Preston guild is very unique because no one else in the UK still does it; it has dated back to 1179.
ReplyDeleteIain Adam 8B/ 8e4
To be honest I did not know much about the Preston guild, apart from that it was every 20 years, until you told us about this link and then I told my Gran about it, then she started to tell me about the past one’s and they sounded very interesting, in what happened in the past guilds. So after all this, I think that the guild (being the last one in the UK) will be good.
ReplyDeleteLewis Gillespie 9c
I have had family members tell me how good the preston guild is and how much there is to do. I will be trying to take part and i will be watching the processions. It will be good for Preston and everyone living in Preston for something to do or watch. It is going to be amazing.
ReplyDeleteJordan Cooper 7K1
Because I have not lived in Preston for that long I do not know much about the Preston Guild. All my family have come from Blackburn. But I have managed to find out a bit about it. I think it is quite a good idea because the whole community comes together to celebrate. Unfortunately, I am not taking part but I think it will be fun to watch it.
ReplyDeleteMelissa Entwistle 7R
Unfortunately my parents do not remember the past guilds and I won't be taking part unless the school is involved. Preston Guild is a celebration of Preston trades. There are prosessions, concerts, balls and a firework display.
ReplyDeleteAdam Oldfield 7R
Well the Preston Guild is an event that is held every 20 years. We celebrate this for beeing proud of the traids we have here. My parents i think have gone to one or two but they dont remember going but anyway this year im going to take part in the Guild and i cant wait.
ReplyDeleteMatthew Brown 7N
I can't wait until the preston guild starts.Im not taking part but I would love to go and watch the huge, colourful processions. My grandparents can remember quite a lot of the times that they have took part in the preston guild. My grandma is taking part this year in the Ladies NFU (Ladies National Farmers Union).
ReplyDeleteWill Burrow 7S
I am not as old as your grandparents, I imagine, but I vividly remember the last Preston Guild when I took part in a procession with my daughter's Brownie Pack. After a long but exciting walk through the town we arrived on Avenham Park and witnessed a spectacular firework display.
DeleteLet's hope this year's is just as memorable.
Before giving this link for me to look at i didn't really know much about the Preston Guild. After looking at the link I understand what its about, the event has been held every 20 years for a very long time which is special because this is the first one that i will have the chance to be apart of. Many different things will be happening to celebrate this event and i am certainly going to get involved, now i know what its about.
ReplyDeleteNiall Hambridge - 9N
My mum was in Year six in 1972, which was then known as 'top juniors'. She was in the Guild Choir on Avenham Park and was placed in height order along with several other schools. She became positioned next to a young girl from a school on the other side of town, they became friends during the rehersals and stayed in touch. Forty years later, that 'young girl' is now my Godmother!
ReplyDeleteLucas Fell 9S
Great story Lucas.
DeleteIm really excited for the Preston Guild i think it will bRing alot more people here and make the city more popular maybe - which will be good all round. Im not taking part but i would like to, its kind of exciting as most of us havnt experienced a preston guild before! I think it will be great to watch and im very intreaged to see what it will be like.
ReplyDeleteMiah Weir 7N
I dont normalytake part in these things but I might giveit a go this year? Jake Whitlock
ReplyDeletei am really looking forward to the guild this year i really enjoy watching proccesions. i am not taking part but my sister did last guild and said it was fun. i like how it has been going on for so long and is individual to preston im sure everyone is going to really enjoy this guild!
ReplyDeleteFrances Brown 7S
I am excited about the Preston Guild activities. Avenham Park is where a lot of the spectacular events are being held like:
ReplyDelete• A luminarium ( massive brightly coloured sculptures that people can walk in and out of )
• A rock festival
• The Fireworks
There are lots of other things as well including:
• The Lancashire Inter-League T20 Cricket Tournament
• The Guild Wheel Cycleway Opening Event
My Mum has told me stories of the way she celebrated the Preston Guild last time in 1992 and she went to a street party dressed as the dog’s dinner and my dad went as the court Jester.
Callum Brocklehurst 7K1 7R
Ms Cox, I may be in a prossesion as a Guide and I will certainly be watching the Preston Guild. I can't wait for all the fireworks and festivals and pagents. I am really excited.
ReplyDeleteFrancesca Round 7N (7K1)
Wow!! I never knew the guild was such a huuuuge celebration for Preston!! Especially because this years guild will be the first one since Preston became a City!! Even though my Mum took part in the last Guild ,as she was in the Girl Guides,I am not taking part but i really do hope to watch a lot of things!
ReplyDeleteChloe Haley 7n 7k1
preston guild sounds like a great expirience but sadly i will not be attending although i am considering the opening festival oon friday the 31 also the activities on avenham park seem exciting exspecially the rock festival
ReplyDeletelauren o 8H
I never knew the guild was such a BIG celebration for Preston! In fact I didn't know what the guild was until you gave me this link. It looks really good especially all the activities, costumes and floats, bright colours seem to be everywhere in the pictures and everyone has smiles on their faces. Unfortunately I am not taking part this year but hopefully I will be able to watch it as someone (Lewis Gillespie) said this was the last one that will be held in the UK. As it is the only guild that is still held in the UK (at the moment) it is very unique; I really wish I could join in but I definitely want to watch it. There is so much history for this event as it dates back to 1179 I’m not sure if any of my family have joined in (as they were out when I did this) but I bet they wished they could if they haven’t.
ReplyDeleteMegan Lowe 9E3 (set 3 year 9)
My parents have told me quite a lot about the past Preston Guilds and I was surprised about just how long it has been running for. My mum had told me, in the past, that she remembers going to the Preston guild when she was young with her 2 older sisters and dad and how the streets were filled with dancers and children and although she didn’t join in she still found it fun.
ReplyDeleteI will not be participating the Preston Guild but my family and I will be going out for a meal and my street may be having a street party aswell! I will most defiantly be watching the precision and I am looking forward to it.
Hannah Murphy 9E3
As I am not helping out in the Preston Guild celebration, I am very excited since this is the first time I will be attending. The Preston Guild is held every 20 years, the last one - in 1992, which was quite a few years before I was born. The electrifying atmosphere, carnivals, street parties, delicious food and colourful fireworks. Despite my older cousins telling me that this is an amazing experience. I will surely be attending this mind-blowing precision!
ReplyDeleteRubia Khan 8B
Unfortunately, im not going to attend the Preston Guild celebration but it looks so much fun though! I also didnt know how big of a celebration it was. I didnt really know much about the celebration, only that it was held every 20 years. My parents have told me stuff about it but I hadnt really paid much attention to it to be honest. Looking at the website has made my knowledge larger about the Preston Guild and hopefully I will be watching it because the floats look wonderful and it all looks like a laugh. I didnt realise it was the last one this year because its a bit unfortunate that its my first. I also didnt realise how long it had been going on for!
ReplyDeleteCaitlin Stubbs 9E3
What makes you think this is the last ever Preston Guild? Have I missed something?
Deletemiss she means its the ONLY one this year you know for another how long? 20-25 years...
DeleteE.H 8B set3
In my family the Preston Guild is a big celebration because all my family come to Preston and get together. I don't get to see all my family together at one time so it is a very big occasion. My Grandma has told me several times about the 1952 guild and how she remembers parading with the churches. As well my dad has told me about his involvement in the 1972 guild and how he paraded with one of the school floats and he was dressed as a letter to show the importance of Preston in the mail system at that time. He also remembers seeing concored fly over the town to mark Preston's involvement in the air industry.
ReplyDeleteEllie McCann 9E3.
I remember seeing Concorde fly over Avenham Park during the festivities. It was a spectacular sight.
DeleteI am not going to help in the guild this year, but i spoke to my mum about it and she said that she had been in two of them and that my dad had drove a float. My mum said she enjoyed going to them but she is not sure whether she will go this year!
ReplyDeleteDann bamber 8R
I dont really know about the Preston Guild as I have never participated or watched the event. However it sounds like cool family and social event so I might ask parents if they participated or watched the last event 20 years ago.So if they found it exiting (if they went) we could able to go.
ReplyDeleteJosh Godley 7s
I think the Preston Guild will be a credit to the city this year! I am unfortunately not taking part but it would be good to help out in any sort of way. It will be good to participate in it and parading through yhe city
ReplyDeleteThavid Tsimboykas 7N
I didn't know that much about the Preston Guild until now ;however i do know that the Preston Guilds are every 20 years, which my brother and sister took part in when they were very little. I might be taking part in the guild this year with my gymnastics club, to promote the club for mew members. I am looking forward to the next guild because they're rare and they bring everyone in Preston together.
ReplyDeleteIsabella Raven
I'm not taking part in the Preston guild this year but maybe sometime in the future, I spoke to my mother about the guild and she told me some quite interesting things about it and she has gone to one and she says she isn't going this year
ReplyDeletedan whitehead 8s 8e4
I think that from looking at the site this event is going to be very spectacular. With many processions and a (hopefully) grand firework display to close off the 10 days of the Preston Guild 2012. My parents never lived in Preston during the 1992 Guild. They lived in Newcastle-upon-Tyne until about 17 years ago and don't have any memories of the Guild. I may be taking part in the Guild with St. John Ambulance. But my Unit (Preston) is still trying to find a trailer of a nice size.
ReplyDeleteAdam Todd 7R - 7K1
(P.S. If you happen to have a trailer of a fairly big size please could you tell me and I will pass it on to my Unit. Thanks)
Though I have never experienced or taken part in a Preston Guild I can assure not just myself but others to that it shall be amazing! As I have never been before [as mentioned above] I still hope that of all things that there shall be a fireworks display. Could anyone answer this for me?
ReplyDeleteBrendan Loughran 7N-7K1
i probably wont be going to the preston guild or helping at this event but my mum says that she has been to one and her friend helped make one of the floats. Also she enjoyed looking at all the bright and bold colours on the floats.
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of the Preston Guild before but on the website it looks very interesting. My parents have heard of the Preston Guild before, but they haven't been to one. Unfortunately, I will not be attending or taking part in this experience of the Preston Guild this year.
ReplyDeleteHaleema Khan 8R
Why won't you be attending? it's going to be fantastic. Surely you won't want to miss the firework spectacular!!
DeleteI am really looking forward to the Guild. Unfortunately I am not going to be taking part although I most certainly will be watching it as I think that all the floats will be all colourful and vibrant. Also I think that it gives Preston a good image as a enjoyable and exciting place to live. Hopefully in the future I will be able to join in with the planning or even taking part in the guild!!
ReplyDeleteKatie Mullins 9B
Since i have read about the preston guild i have learnt a lot of new things. The Preston guild started 1179 which means that it has been going for 190 years short of a milenium. Even though it is next year, I am excited to get involved and take part. I think it is special and unique that the Preston Guild is the only guild left in the United Kingdom.
ReplyDeleteGeorge Jacques 9B
George, where did you get your info from? 2012 is Guild year - not to mention the Year of the Olympics. MIMO!!
DeleteI think the preston guild is an amazing idia and I wish I could take part. I also found out from somewere ,im not certian were, that if your chiled is born this year its classed as a guild baby and you get a cirtificate. I love the idia that people who once lived here get an invite to the gild event and it comes in a big ben case (lovely ideia.) It is really great that preston does the guild as it brings some pride to us as it is are own spetial tredition.
DeleteIsobel Hindle 8H
By the way is it true that the guild weel comes through are school.
I had never heard of the Preston guild before you sent me this link-its quite fascinating that it has been going on for so long, also that it is only every twenty years!. it looks interesting and hopefully i will be watching it. both of my parents have been to the most recent one, and they both explained how it is a brilliant thing to take part in.
ReplyDeleteDan Edwards
I have recenlty thought about the upcoming occasion and how rare it is, even though this will be the first guild event in my life time i will unfortunatly not be attending the festival. The reason why I will not be attending the Preston Guild is because on the date of the event I am already taking part in another activity. While the event is on i will be sure to check up on the website to see any other information that is updated
ReplyDeleteAshley Year 9 Set 3
I am very very excited for the guild. Its my first guild so i'm looking forward to see what kind of celebrations will be taking place! I have heard lots from my parents, and my elder cousins. I will be looking into taking part maybe even if its just the street partys.
ReplyDeleteAmmarah Taylor 7K1 :)
I've never heard of the Preston guild before, but everything looks good on the website, I won't be attending, I have asked my parents about it and they said that they had heard of it but never been to it,it looks really exciting. The fireworks and festivals look great, and it's a very good tradition.
ReplyDeleteAlthough i already had an opinion about Preston guild and what i thought about it after looking into it in more detail i found a lot more out. I stand strongly by my opinion that Preston guild is a big event that wastes a lot of money even though it does show what Preston's about. Even if it is the only guild left in the united kingdom it still uses a lot of money that could be used for better things.
ReplyDeleteEwan Cookson 9S
Despite this event really appeling to me,I am not taking part. Before openenig this link I was unaware of this big event and what it is all about so, by watching the quick video summing up this event it seems to be such a laugh and a great event to take part in. With this event only being held every 20 yers I thought I would ask my parents if they have ever experienced an event like this , and it turns out they didnt know much more than I did. They knew of this event however never really knew what the whole concept of it was. Hopefully in the next event in 20 years I will be able to share my experience of it and tell others to celebrate it the next Preston Guild Celebration.
ReplyDeleteLydia Ball 9S
WOW! The preston guild looks MIND BLOWING! All the colours and smells must be so exciting! Even though I'm not taking part, my dad says he lived in preston at the time, and he remembers many diffrent street parties around his area. That was the first preston guild he ever saw, as he was only 5 when the previous one happened and he didn't live in lancashire at that time. It has over 1 million visitors and lasts 10 WHOLE days long! I am not missing a minute of it!

I am very exited for the Preston guild as i take part in many activities that are held there.I will be taking part because the celebration looks really fun and its always good to get involved! Also the guild will give Preston a even better rep then it already has!The other main reason that I will be taking place is because i love bright colours and i love floats.
ReplyDeleteSam Hadfield-Ayrton
I am looking forward to the Preston Guild because i will like to see what type of celebrations take place as it is my first guild. 2012 is a important year because the olympics is also taking place.
ReplyDeleteHumairah 7k1
I'm not taking part I the Preston guild even though it looks like it will be interesting ad lots of fun. it would be fun for me to be the first one from my family to go to one but I think because I'm not actually from Preston then I shouldn't go. but it doesn't matter because this is the first time I've ever heard about it before the half term.
ReplyDeleteAimee Sykes 8c
I have heard about the guild because my grandma and grandad told me about it also my mum's brothers took part in the 1972 guild with their school and my mum was only a toddler and i have seen lots of videos and we have plenty of memories and only slightly coloured videos but you can still see what is happening it looks like an amazing opportunity for Preston show off all the diversity and cultures in our community and that we are all unique.
ReplyDeleteCharlotte Flynn 9E3
The Guild should be really good and i might go myself also the best place for me is Avenum Park and the lasers that fill the hole park with massive beams of light. Also the massive fireworks desplay that i've heard of.Some people say it's amazing, but the part that i'm interestid in is when there's lodes of musiq players and bands, but the thing i'm not so fond of is being stud next to lodes of people shoulder to shoulder but it's better when there's less people but there probably won't be.
ReplyDeleteThomas Crook 8H
I have heard about the preston guild, from my parents my mum said she did it when she was at school if i believe her or not and i have watches some clips on youtube about what has happened on the previous event.
ReplyDeleteThis is the first time i have heardof the guild hall, i won't be partisapating, but i may watch it on tv. It looks like a very good event to go to but i will be busy.
ReplyDeleteI think the guild is a realy good event, it will bring the whole of preston together to celebrate. My family had a street party when the last guild was 20 years ago, they actually have a picture to show aswell. I won't be taking part in the guild this year sadly but I will definatley be attending the event and maybe even having a family gathering for it.
